Lady's Story

by her Mom, June Greenway

February 18th is only a few days away and it's a special occasion for Lady, our beautiful Border Collie, and me.

For 14 years we (Carl and I) were blessed with the love and companionship of a very special friend. We had adopted a beautiful Border Collie mix when he was a six week old puppy. He lived a long and good life. December, 2000, we painfully let him go to wait for us at the Rainbow Bridge.

February 18th is my birthday and all I wanted for my birthday in 2001 was another friend to fill the big empty place in my heart and our home.

Five members of our family started checking the shelters and any place we could find that had animals for adoption. We didn't give up. After two trips to each place that day, we went again two times.

The next day, fate introduced me to Karen Lively, a member of the wonderful group of people with East Tennessee Border Collie Rescue. She had a five month old female coming in that evening. Karen promised and did send us an application.

On February 19, 2001 we adopted our beautiful "Pretty Lady". On February 21, she came to our home where she will live fourteen plus years if we are lucky.

One of her favorite past times!

It took some time for her to accept that she really was home. She seemed so insecure, but time, love, patience, and some training have changed all of that insecurity.

Lady has encouraged daily exercise for us. Long walks, games of Frisbee, and catch ball. She would love to be free from a lead when she walks, but deer don't stop at fences like cows and she's diligent and will not give up.

Lady would love to get loose and chase this precious baby out of her front yard!

We are in an area where there are coyotes, fox, raccoon, skunks, groundhogs, squirrels and wild turkey. Large cave areas around where some of the wild life live are on our land.

"No one told me I am not a lap dog!" We celebrate Lady's birthday in September (she was a year old in September 2001)

At about 7 months old. Lady loves her toys, especially the noisy ones! Carl told his friend he didn't think he would ever be found buying toys for a dog. Lady has many toys!

She herds birds, butterflies, and anything that moves in a fenced back yard that's almost an acre and she can see in every direction.

I will never be able to thank Karen and the Border Collie Rescue enough for giving us an opportunity to be a part of Lady's life.
